Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)

What is ACT?

Assertive Community Treatment is a nationally recognized Evidence Based Practice for treating children and adults that have serious social and emotional disturbances that prevent them from living in their community. ACT provides intensive therapeutic and psychiatric services and supervision in the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Services include comprehensive psychiatric assessment, individual, group and family therapy, medication management, community integration and crisis support. Services are provided in the setting that is most convenient to the family whether in-home or in the community. ACT is usually a 6 month program.

Who is eligible for ACT

Eligibility for this service is determined by the State and the Administrative Service Organization they have hired to manage the service. They will authorize services if the child’s behavior has caused significant problems in their home, school or community and as a result are at risk for an out of home placement such as emergency psychiatric hospitalization or residential care. Children who are being discharged from a crisis unit, residential program or hospital service also qualify for ACT services. The child referred must have MaineCare, be between 0-20 years old and have a DSM IV diagnosis or a DC 0-3 diagnosis which has lasted or is expected to last for one year.p>
